Westerly Middle School
6th Grade Science
Before class begins my CT is usually outside waiting for students to come inside the classroom. Occasionally she waits inside and watches her students come in the room and sit down. When students enter the classroom they take a worksheet out of a folder titled “science starter” that hangs next to the door. As soon has students sit down they begin working on the sheet. Once everyone is done with the sheet the teacher goes over them with the class. My CT makes the science starter worksheets every night. Once the sheets are reviewed she reviews and collects any homework if it was assigned and then begins her lesson. When beginning her lessons, she always connects what the students are going to be doing that day to what they have done the previous day. I think the science starters my CT uses are a great idea. They usually consist of a few questions that pertain to the material covered the previous day. It s a great way to assess students prior knowledge and to see if students understood the material they learned the previous day. If students struggle with the sheets it’s a good indication that the concepts need to be reviewed or revisited.
